My First Poem is the nursery brand of Young Writers. We aim to encourage the reading and writing of poetry within nurseries and preschools by:
Our national poetry competition runs each year. We invite nurseries/preschools to enter their children into the competition using our specially designed template and other resources.
After a competition has closed, entries go to our Editorial department, who enjoy reading every single poem we've received, then create regional books. Work is selected for publication based on imagination and expression. By using a specially designed template that introduces children to poetry and encourages creativity, My First Poem is inclusive to children of different ages and abilities, as well as EAL children and families. This means children have a realistic chance of seeing their work in print. The editors will return work that is incomplete, illegible or that doesn't make sense to the nursery/preschool.
We send competition packs to nurseries and preschools, which always include a themed template to help children write their first poem. The resources we provide are designed to raise awareness of poetry with the aim of getting children to enjoy the creative writing processes as well as participating in the project.
Free Online Resources
We have a wide range of free resources available for preschool children on our website. Young Writers is also a TES Content Partner and shares resources on www.tes.co.uk.
We award prizes to nurseries/preschools. Prizes vary from competition to competition, but have included large cash prizes and resources. Prizes are awarded once a competition has closed for that year, so winners are announced after all the books in that year's series have been published. Have a look at the winners' section of the website to find out more! Parents do not have to buy a copy of the book their child is in to be published, and their child's nursery/preschool will still be in with a chance of winning a prize as long as they are published. Copyright remains with the author. We also provide every nursery/preschool a copy of the book that their children's work features in to ensure every child has the opportunity to see their work in print.
We publish our My First Poem books in-house, here in Peterborough. Please read our Production Timeline to find out more about each stage of creating a My First Poem book.
We welcome feedback and suggestions on how our products and services can be improved.
